KAMON – NEW COLLECTION

The collection unfolds in three asymmetrical Kamon earrings, the name of the collection means “house” and “emblem”. Kamons are usually used to identify a family and are passed down through the generations. They are often compared to the blazons of the European cavalry, but in reality they are very different because in ancient Japan there were no surnames except in very rare exceptions. They are based on geometric or floral designs, however some may represent animals, natural phenomena or landscapes. It is believed that these motifs were originally used in fabrics, to indicate their belonging to a samurai clan in order to stand out on the battlefield, but then in the twelfth century they became mainly heraldic coats of arms. The society of the time was mainly illiterate and the Kamon also became a useful instrument of recognition also for craft categories, for temples and shrines or for theatrical troupe.
